Belgian citizens traveling to the United States (and arriving by air or sea) can travel with an electronic ESTA under the rules of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) set up by the US Congress in 1986. The VWP allows citizens from 39 countries, Belgium included, to travel to the United States for tourism, business, medical, or transit purposes without having to apply for a regular visa. This makes the application and entry process, both cheaper and more accessible for Belgian citizens visiting America.
Belgium has been part of the Visa Waiver Program since 1991 and has been an active member ever since. Unless ineligible, Belgian travelers can visit the United States for 90 days or less. Providing they have an electronic and machine-readable passport with which they have applied for and have received an approved ESTA.
Belgium and the United States have had diplomatic relations in place ever since Belgium declared independence from the Netherlands in 1832. The two countries are NATO allies and have a balanced and cooperative relationship on matters of trade, investment, and foreign policy.
On the whole, Belgian people have felt a certain level of affection towards the United States after the role they played in liberating Belgium from Nazi Germany in World War Two. However, it is unclear whether recent political changes and standpoints in the United States have affected the views of Belgian people towards the US.
Belgium and the United States are both members of a number of the same international organizations, such as the United Nations, NATO, the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization.
