Chile is a relatively recent addition to the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP), having entered into the program in 2014. The VWP enables all Chilean citizens to enter the United States using an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which can be applied for online. The ESTA is valid for a period of up to two years, with no one trip being longer than 90 days.
The VWP allows the immigration process to be streamlined and makes it easier for Chileans to visit the United States. Around 500,000 Chileans visit the US each year.Notably, Chile is the only South American country to have the privilege of being part of the VWP, which is quite significant in portraying the close relationship between the two nations.
The Republic of Chile and the United States have had bilateral relations since the 19th Century, but their relationship has become much stronger in the recent period since the late 1980s onwards. These changes came about when Chile reinstated new democratic practices after years of social and political unrest within the country.
Chile is thought to be one of the closest strategic allies of the United States in South America thanks to their positive status against corruption. Both countries are also members of the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance that claims an attack against one of them is the equivalent of an attack against them all.
A Chile–the United States Free Trade Agreement has been in place since 2003, which all but eliminated tariffs on exports between the two countries.
