Czech citizens can visit the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which allows them to travel without the need for a full visa. This is a much easier and cheaper way to visit the United States, which therefore promotes travel between the Czech Republic and America.
The Czech Republic was added to the Visa Waiver Program by President Bush in October 2008, along with Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and South Korea. As part of the VWP, Czech citizens can travel to the US for a period of up to 90 days. The purpose of travel must be tourism, business, medical, or transit, and each person’s Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is valid for a period of up to two years.
The Czech Republic and the United States of America have fairly good bilateral relations. The relationship has grown and grown as the Czech Republic moved from being part of the USSR to have a democracy in 1989, joining NATO in 1999 and becoming part of the European Union in 2004.
The Czech Republic and the US are both economic and military allies and also participate in cultural exchanges as part of the work done by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
While the US was first concerned about the split between the Czech Republic and Slovakia from their previous combined state, it now both recognises and remains well connected with both nations.
